Mac Shockwave Updated

I noticed a new build of Shockwave for Mac was released today. Wonder what is new?

Guess I’ll be playing with it tomorrow to see if anything broke ๐Ÿ™‚

Update: Seems as if the Windows version has also been updated.

Shockwave.ini jumps to new home (OSX)

For the developers out there that like to get a slightly more descriptive error message in their Shockwave-based content you need to have a Shockwave.ini file placed in your shockwave folder. This prior post talked about where you should put it for Shockwave 10 on OSX.

With Shockwave 11 you should navigate to your /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Shockwave 11/ folder. There you will see the DirectorShockwave.bundle. Control-click (right-click) on that bundle and choose “Show contents.” Inside that sits the Plugin.framework folder.

Place the Shockwave.ini in that folder (you will probably have to enter your password at that time) with this text in it.

[Lingo]
DisplayFullLingoErrorText=1

That usually makes debugging just a bit easier ๐Ÿ™‚

Note: I haven’t yet looked in to the location for Windows. If anyone knows feel free to comment. I’m sure I’ll need to look for it one of these days.

SocioTown Goes Beta

For those that are in to this sort of thing, drop by SocioTown. SocioTown is a 100% web-based 3D Social MMOG (Massive Multiplayer Online Game). It’s playable in a browser with no downloadable client required. It utilizes Adobe’s Shockwave Player.

SocioTown is the biggest and most sophisticated browser-based 3D virtual world to date. Players can enjoy a fully immersive and persistent 3D environment such that hasnรขโ‚ฌโ„ขt been seen on the web yet. Player data is stored in database servers, so users can play anywhere from home, work, or school without skipping a beat.

The screenshots on the page look really sweet.

After years of waiting…TUAW mentions Shockwave

I dropped TUAW a line about Shockwave the day it came out. They picked up on the story and made a post about it.

Interesting comments rolling in.

Shockwave 11 has arrived.

The links for Shockwave download are now live to Shockwave 11.0.0.0.

Is that enough zeros?

Note: If you are on MacIntel you may have to go to the alternates page due to the redirect issues that MacIntels have had to deal with for the past 2 years.

Shockwave 11 Links ‘R Up

As a reader pointed out, the Shockwave 11 links are now up. Currently they don’t lead to anything though. Looks like something will be out in the wild later tonight. Guess I’ll be doing a lot of testing of online content in the next week.

Currently the link just leads you to a lovely 404 page, “The requested URL /pub/shockwave/default/english/macosx/latest/Shockwave_Installer_Full.dmg was not found on this server.”

ExploreLearning: Finalist for Two Codies

ExploreLearning won a Codie each of the past two years. This year we are finalists for a Codie in two different categories: Best Mathematics Instructional Solution and Best Science Instructional Solution for the ExploreLearning Gizmos.

Gizmos are made with Director (and have been since 1995).

Will I get my hands on two Codies this year? The two sitting on my desk are getting a bit lonely ๐Ÿ™‚

Apple Security Update Includes Shockwave

Today Apple released Security Update 2007-009 for OSX 10.4 and 10.5. It includes both the Shockwave for Director and Flash Player Plug-ins.

The upside of this is that Apple thinks it is good to include Shockwave with a system update. Shockwave has been preinstalled on Macs for a LONG time now. The downside is that although the plug-in is update, it is the Rosetta-only Shockwave. It is getting so hard to deal with Rosetta. All I want for Chrismukkah is a MacIntel version of Shockwave.

This was the statement included with the security update:

Shockwave Plug-in

Available for: Mac OS X v10.4.11, Mac OS X Server v10.4.11, Mac OS X v10.5.1, Mac OS X Server v10.5.1

Impact: Opening maliciously crafted Shockwave content may lead to arbitrary code execution

Description: Multiple vulnerabilities exist in Shockwave Player. By enticing a user to open maliciously crafted Shockwave content, an attacker may cause arbitrary code execution. This update addresses the issues by updating Shockwave Player to version 10.1.1.016. Credit to Jan Hacker of ETH Zurich for reporting the problem in Shockwave.

Thanks Jan!

And while on the topic of a MacIntel version of the Plug-in, it seems as if Director has been slightly delayed. Early in 2007 Adobe had said the 2nd half of 2007 for a new version, but that has now been pushed back to January 2008. Read more in the Director FAQ.

Updated Shockwave Plugin

There is an updated version of the Shockwave plug-in for Windows up on the Adobe site. Not sure what has changed.

Update: Seems as if the plugin no longer does a redirect to shockwave.com after installation is complete.

Big $$$ for Casual Games…and Shockwave.

A press release from MTV Networks’ Nickelodeon Kids and Family Group says they have committed $100 million to its online casual games business. From the press release:

Shockwave: Shockwave will become the games destination for families. Increased focus this fall on www.shockwave.com will be on the creation of innovative applications which are both fun for the user and an opportunity for prominent integrated advertising. The first new application to launch is Jigsaw Video. In addition, Shockwave will be more closely linked with family-targeted brands within Nickelodeon Kids and Family Group, like Nick-at- Nite television, to give advertisers the ability to promote their messaging across multiple platforms. Shockwave will also increase its publishing of downloadable games with Carrie the Caregiver Episode 2: Preschool, scheduled to come out later this year.

Jigsaw Video and Carrie the Caregiver (both the latter done with Director) were developed by Rob Gordon over at Article 19. I had the chance to work with Rob a few years ago, and I’m sure some of you have seen him on various mailing lists. I certainly hope he gets a slice of the pie since his games were featured. ๐Ÿ™‚
